Structural studies in a Latin American Crystallography Laboratory: A little bit of almost everything. From Natural Products to Semiconductors
Although the number of experimental facilities associated with the different techniques nowadays used routinely worldwide in the characterization of materials has progressively increased in Latin American countries in the last few years, there is still a need to have centralized facilities even for some basic instrumentation. The other approach is that some of the research groups working with a particular set of techniques would support the research activities of other groups in carrying out the characterization of materials of their interest.
Despite the difficulties which could rise in such an environment, this provides the opportunity of collaborating in interdisciplinary research projects. Our Crystallography Laboratory has a long-standing record of supporting different groups and institutions, including public and private entities, which need to characterize a wide range of materials.
In the present talk, a review of several areas of collaboration in the structural characterization of materials using X-ray diffraction techniques with different research groups of Universidad de Los Andes (Mérida, Venezuela), and groups from other universities from Venezuela and surrounding countries will be presented. Emphasis will be made in the characterization of multinary semiconducting materials synthesized in the Semiconductor Center of our university and on the recent work carried out on several active pharmaceutical ingredients, processed by a small local pharmaceutical company, and some of their metal derivatives.
